Successful start for All-Native tournament

The Sto:lo Ice Hawks All-Native Hockey Showdown had a stellar debut and should return next year.

The Stó:lô Ice Hawks finished second overall at their own first annual Stó:lô Ice Hawks All-Native Hockey Tournament last weekend.

Six teams hit the ice at Prospera Centre and the Ice Hawks went 3-2. Brandon Ned had the overtime winner in their first game, a 3-2 win over Chase.

The Ice Hawks were dumped 6-0 by Prince George in game two, but rebounded to demolish Warriors in Flight 9-0 in their playoff opener.

Stó:lô exacted revenge with a 2-0 semi-final win over Prince George, with Otis Jasper and Dave Jimmie scoring the goals.

But Alkali knocked them off in the tournament final, skating away with a 5-2 win. Tyler Simpson scored both Stó:lô goals.

Chase finished third overall.

Soowahlie Chief Otis Jasper was impressed with the calibre of hockey and the large group of supporters accompanying visiting teams to Chilliwack. He believes this year’s tournament will be the perfect springboard to future success.

“We definitely put ourselves on the All-Native tournament map,” he noted. “The visiting teams had a great experience in Chilliwack and word-of-mouth about the tournament and city will assure that next year’s tournament will expand with a 35+ category and a women’s category.”
