Swimmers trim times at meet

KISU swim coach impressed by performances that led to improved times and medals

Members of the KISU swim club had success at the 2014 B.C. Short Course AA championship in Chilliwack at the end of February.

Coach Tina Hoeben said her swimmers had a great meet achieving new time standards, along with earning medals and best times.

Coming home with medals were Wynn Nordlund, Evan Peters, Belize Souch-Tremblay and Jackson Logie.

Nordlund, 14, cut 13 seconds from his 200-metre breast stroke to finish in 2:40.31 and earn a AAA time while taking gold. Evan Peters, 11, also medalled taking silver and bronze in the 100- and 200-m back stroke, respectively. Peters completed the 200-m backstroke in 2:55.53, cutting 18.02 seconds from his original time. Belize Souch-Tremblay pocketed gold and silver in the 400 IM and 800-m freestyle, respectively. She also earned bronze in the 200 IM. In the 400 IM, she finished in 5:36.42 after cutting 6.56 seconds from her time. In the 800-m free, Souch-Tremblay cut 36.28 seconds.

Emily Caruso, 12, earned a AA time in the 200-metre breast stroke clocking in at 3:07.02. She improved her time by 8.99 seconds. Bryce Doroshuk chopped 12.52 seconds from his 200 individual medley to earn a AA time in 3:16.87. Justin Fotherby, 10, earned a AAA time in the 100-m fly when he chopped 15.95 seconds to finish in 1:28.22. Liam Wallich, 10, trimmed the time on his 400-m free by 47.41 seconds, finishing in 6:08.91.

“There were a lot of impressive swims at the meet,” said Hoeben. “Wynn Nordlund stood out in a big way, winning the gold in the 200-m breast stroke was a phenomenal swim.”

In the standard meet, Doroshuk placed sixth in the 100-m backstroke finishing in 1:26.85. Fotherby was fifth in the 100-m fly. Kenzi Haberstock placed sixth in the 200 IM in 2:41.93 and was sixth in the 400 IM. Reece Haberstock was sixth in the 200-m fly finishing in 2:38.54, as well as the 200-m back and 400 IM. Logie, 11, was first in the and 400 IM and eighth in the 100-m fly. Nordlund fifth in the 400 IM.  Souch-Tremblay won gold in the 400 IM, finishing in 5:37.42, silver in the 800-m freestyle and bronze in the 200 IM.

Kristen Vandeweghe placed fifth in the 200-m freestyle and 400 IM. Mackenzie Wallich placed fifth in the 100-m backstroke, sixth in the 200-m backstroke and eighth in the 400-m freestyle.

“It is a great meet for swimmers to develop both their racing speed and confidence at higher level meets,” said Hoeben.
