A Salmon Arm Tennis Club team took top spot and will be representing the Interior in the Miele Provincial Team Tennis Championships.
The 4.5 Men’s team of Ken Hecker, Bob Langford, Winston Pain, Barry Nelson, George Kocsis and Jim Kocsis qualified in Kelowna this past weekend, meaning they will compete in the provincials in Vancouver in August.
Hecker said all team members won matches over the weekend, but it eventually came down to just one match.
“It was a singles match, won by Barry Nelson, 11-9 in the tiebreaker. That decided it,” says Hecker.
Come August, four teams will be competing in the Vancouver Open tournament, part of the pro tour. Along with the Salmon Arm team, competitors will be one Vancouver Island team along with two from the Lower Mainland/Fraser Valley.
Thirty-one athletes, almost all from the Salmon Arm Tennis Club, vied for a spot in the provincial team tennis championships, but just one team was successful.
Club president Marianne VanBuskirk says everyone played exceptionally well.
