Tlu-Piich Games begin in Alberni

The 34th annual Nuu-chah-nulth Tribal Council Tlu-Piich Games began Wednesday, Aug. 10 and will run until Sunday, Aug. 14.

The 34th annual Nuu-chah-nulth Tribal Council Tlu-Piich Games began Wednesday, Aug. 10 and will run until Sunday, Aug. 14.

The games are a gathering of Nuu-chah-nulth and Indigenous Nations of all ages and abilities who showcase a healthy balanced lifestyle through family-oriented activities, while promoting the spirit of friendship and unity through sport and traditional events.

Day two of the games, Thursday, Aug. 11,  begins at 9 a.m. for track and field races at Bob Dailey Stadium.

Relay races are expected to be held starting at 12:30 p.m. at the track.

A lacrosse clinic will be held at the lacrosse box at 3:30 p.m. next to Rec Park at Gyro Centre and a three on three basketball game will be held at 4 p.m. at the Alberni Athletic Hall.

The basketball groups include ages 13 and under, 17 and under and seniors at 18 and up. Lahal will be held at 8 p.m. at the House of Gathering.

On Day three, Friday, Aug. 12, canoe races will be held at Canal Beach with a registration time of 8 a.m. and races to start at 9 a.m.

Activities, language games and a BBQ will be held at Williamson Park on Johnston Road beginning at 1 p.m. on Friday.

A slo-pitch and fastball tournament will also be taking place on August 13 and 14.

The main field for this tournament will be Rec Park. Other fields will be Echo Major.

Closing ceremonies will be held after the tournaments on Sunday, Aug. 14.

All events are free to the public.
