Langley Rivermen forward Gage Torrel is heading back across the border.

The second-year forward for the Langley junior A hockey club has accepted an NCAA Division 1 scholarship offer to join Lake Superior State University next season.

“I’m very excited for the opportunity Lake Superior State has given me and it’s going to be a lot of fun,” said Torrel.

“I’m looking forward to it.”

Torrel said he heeded his father’s advice when it came time to choose a school.

“My dad told me you should go to a school where you’re wanted,” he said. “I felt this was the right choice.”

Torrel also thanked his advisor, the Rivermen coaching staff and his parents.

The 20-year-old from Minnesota has 19 points in 20 games this season for the Rivermen. Last year, he scored 24 points in 28 games in helping Langley capture the Ron Boileau Memorial Trophy for the best record in the BCHL regular season.

“We’re happy for Gage,” said Rivermen head coach and general manager Bobby Henderson.

“He’s worked really hard both last season and this season and we know he’s going to do well there.”

Lake Superior State is located in Sault, Sainte Marie, Mich. and has produced some NHL talent, including Doug Weight, Brian Rolston and Bates Battaglia.
