Train with an Olympic hopeful in Campbell River

Matt Sharpe, who is originally from Campbell River, has set his sights on competing for Canada in the 2016 Olympic Games

Have you ever wanted to train with an Olympic hopeful?

Have you ever wanted to ask an elite athlete for nutrition advice?

Well don’t miss your opportunity. On Sunday, Strathcona Triathlon Club will host a running clinic with guest presenter Matt Sharpe.

At only 21, Sharpe has a long list of athletic accomplishments, including two-time National Junior Series Champion, won the 2010 Canadian Junior Championships and was ninth at the 2010 World Junior Championships. Sharpe, who is originally from Campbell River, has set his sights on competing for Canada in the 2016 Olympic Games.

Like many triathletes, Sharpe’s start in the sport began in the pool as a competitive swimmer in Campbell River. Sharpe was introduced to his first triathlon when he was nine years old in Comox. He immediately fell in love with the sport and has been a passionate and relentlessly dedicated triathlete ever since.  In 2007, wanting to focus on Triathlon excellence, Sharpe and his family moved to Victoria to train at the National Triathlon Centre.

After graduating from Claremont Secondary and attending the University of Victoria, Sharpe decided to commit to the sport full-time.  This resulted in Canada’s best result at the World Junior Championships in the current format and his first professional win at 19 years of age.

With the 2016 Olympics as the focus, Sharpe is committing the next four years to winning a medal for Canada. Sharpe has had early success while quickly progressing through the Canadian ranks. He is a two-time National Junior Series Champion, won the 2010 Canadian Junior Championships and was ninth at the 2010 World Junior Championships. Now Sharpe is taking the next step in his goal to be a member of the Teck Team and consistent performer at the World Championship Series, Olympics, Pan-American and Commonwealth Games as he competes in his second year on the National Development Team in 2012. Sharpe’s ultimate goal is to win a few medals at these prestigious events to reflect his commitment and love of triathlon.

The running clinic will take place from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. on Sunday, March 17 at the Sportsplex and will include running drills from Sharpe after which we will move inside to refuel and enjoy an informal social where you can ask Sharpe for some training tips.

This clinic is open to the public. The cost is $10 for adults and $ for youth (12 to 17 years old) and is free to members of the Strathcona Triathlon Club. E-mail triclubstrathcona@gmail.com to register for the clinic.
