Triathletes conquer Westwood course

NANAIMO – One hundred versatile athletes reached the finish line of the first Westwood Lake Triathlon.

One hundred versatile athletes reached the finish line of the first Westwood Lake Triathlon.

The event consisted of a swim in the lake, a cycle course in the Jingle Pot area and then a run around the lake. There were sprint, Olympic and half-iron triathlons running at the same time, with the half-iron competitors swimming two kilometres, biking 90km and then running four 5.2km laps of the lake trail.

“Westwood Lake is an ideal setting for a triathlon event,” said Joe Dixon, race director, in a press release.

Nanaimo’s Jon Hillier won the sprint triathlon in one hour, 15 minutes, 57 seconds, with Abbotsford’s Erica Thomson the first female finisher in 1:29:21.

In the Olympic-distance race, Suzanne Chandler of Australia won in 2:34:05, ahead of the first male finisher, Richard Hayden of Saltspring Island, who finished in 2:38:44.

Martin Caron of Squamish won the half-iron triathlon with a time of 4:43:04, with Lauren Powell of North Vancouver top female finisher in 5:20:41.

The event was organized by Victoria’s Dynamic Race Events.
