Up against some of the top swimmers in western Canada, four members of the Langley Olympians acquitted themselves quite nicely.
The quartet were competing in Saskatoon at the 2013 Speedo Western Canadian championships, which was attended by 500 of the top swimmers, who all had to achieve a certain qualifying time in their respective events to earn the invitation.
And at the meet, 16-year-old Martha Metcalfe delivered a superb performance in the 1500 freestyle event. Metcalfe’s time of 17:24.31 placed her sixth overall in the open women’s final, but more importantly, she achieved her senior national qualifying time.
In the women’s 15 and under division, 14-year-old Hillary Metcalfe won silver int he 50m breast stroke and 200 breast, as well as bronze in the 100 breast and 200 individual medley events. She also net new Olympians club records in the 50 breast (32.83) and 100 breast (1:11.99).
Justin Schramm, 14, finished fourth in the 16 and under 200 fly event, as well as setting a new club mark in the event at 2:07.85. He also set a new Olympians mark in the 50 fly.
And 13-year-old Chelsea Borrowdale came away from the met with personal bests in all of her events.
“It was great to see another swimmer from our club making senior nationals and for our young swimmers winning medals and making second swims at a meet of this standard,” said head coach Brian Metcalfe.
