Two more victories have pushed the Trinity Western Spartans winning streak to eight matches, a program-high for the women’s soccer team.
The Spartans defeated the Victoria Vikes 2-1 and the Fraser Valley Cascades 1-0 on Friday and Saturday, respectively, at Rogers Field on the TWU campus.
Gerig scored the lone goal of the match on Saturday, striking in the 31st minute when she converted Jenna Di Nunzio’s cross.
Against Victoria, Jennifer Castillo opened the scoring for the home side in the 67th minute, but some Spartan miscues resulted in Victoria responding in the 84th minute with a goal from Emma Greig.
But with time winding down, Nikki Wright found herself wide open after some Vikes’ miscues and blasted home the winner.
Trinity Western’s Kristin Funk was in goal for both games, making two saves against Victoria and three against Fraser Valley for her fifth shutout of the season.
Despite picking up six points on the weekend as the season heads into the stretch drive, Spartans coach Graham Roxburgh knows his team can play better.
“It wasn’t great for 90 minutes, but we battled and sometimes you have to win ugly,” he said following Saturday’s match.
“We were a little bit tentative to start and it took us a while to get our legs going.
“There were still some good performances; sometimes you can’t play the prettiest of soccer and they made it very difficult for us to play.”
Trinity Western (8-1-0, 24 points) faces a stiff test this weekend as they play at UBC (7-1-1, 22 points) on Saturday in a Canada West showdown for first place. The Thunderbirds are the lone team to defeat the Spartans this season.
Trinity Western is ranked third in the country while UBC is fifth.
