TWU soccer: Spartans shutout steak passes 300 minutes

Women's soccer team has not allowed goal since second game of season

The Trinity Western Spartans pushed their win streak to four games as they swept the Prairies over the weekend, extending their shutout streak to 301 minutes.

The women’s soccer team downed the third-ranked Alberta Pandas 1-0 on Saturday thanks to a penalty kick goal from Colleen Webber in the 51st minute.

And Trinity Western keeper Kristen Funk made sure that was all that was needed as she stopped all nine shots on goal.

“Edmonton is always a difficult place to play as Alberta plays well here and (Saturday) was no different as it was a tight game and Alberta was very dangerous,” said coach Graham Roxburgh.

“Funk was the player of the game by far as she made a couple of great game-winning saves after Alberta responded to our goal,” he added.

The Spartans followed that up with a 2-0 victory on Sunday in Saskatoon against the Saskatchewan Huskies.

“Very pleased with our overall performance, our composure and ability to pass and create chances was probably the difference against a solid and dangerous Saskatchewan team,” Roxburgh said.

“In the end it is a very good road trip on a very hard trip because of the ability and competitiveness of the league.”

Melissa Mobilio opened the scoring in the 32nd minute when she took a pass from Webber and banged it past the Saskatchewan keeper, Marissa Wilford.

The visitors doubled the lead in the 68th minute.

Mobilio was denied on her chance, but she flipped the ball over to Sarah-Kim Bergeron, who put the Spartans up 2-0.

Funk made one save for her third shutout of the season.

“Our back four were very good today and Funk was very tidy,” Roxburgh said.

“Caitlin Haines and Vanessa Kovacs were also very productive today.”

The two victories improved eighth-ranked Trinity Western to 4-1-0.

The team is back on the Prairies this weekend, in Regina on Saturday to face the Cougars and in Winnipeg on Sunday against the Manitoba Bisons.
