The University of the Fraser Valley basketball teams are spearheading a pair of charitable initiatives in the coming week.
• The Cascades women’s squad is hosting their annual fundraising events in support of CIS Shoot for the Cure, which generates funds for breast cancer research.
The team is holding a dinner and silent auction on Jan. 30 at Phoenix Lounge, featuring former Canadian Idol competitor Greg Neufeld. The event runs from 7 to 9 p.m., and tickets are $20 and include a burger, fries and a drink. All proceeds go to the B.C./Yukon chapter of the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation.

The Shoot for the Cure initiative was launched in 2008 by the CIS Women’s Basketball Coaches Association, and has raised over $600,000 for breast cancer research in the years since.
• UFV’s home basketball games vs. the Regina Cougars on Jan. 31 will feature a mental health awareness focus (5:30 to 9 p.m.), in partnership between UFV Athletics and Fraser Health’s Speak Up Program.
The goal is to underscore the importance of mental wellness in a positive and uplifting manner. The event will feature educational segments between games and at halftimes, along with booths and art exhibits run by Speak Up volunteers and UFV Counselling Services.
