Langley Rivermen second-year forward on list of players to watch ahead of 2015 NHL Draft

Marcus Vela is on the initial players to watch list released by NHL Central Scouting.

The Langley Rivermen forward was given a ‘C’ grade, which translates into a fourth, fifth or sixth round draft pick, according to the scouting service.

He was one of five BCHL players on the list and they are all draft eligible in June 2015.

“It’s a real honour for me,” he said.

“I’ve been fortunate enough to play with great teammates and great coaching.”

In his rookie BCHL season, Vela had 11 goals and 22 points in 54 games.

“I’m not surprised to see his name there,” said Rivermen head coach and general manager Bobby Henderson.

“It’s something he’s been working hard for.

“Obviously it’s not the end result, but it’s a step in the process and it’s exciting for Marcus to be recognized.”

Vela, a 17-year-old from Burnaby, is committed to the New Hampshire Wildcats, an NCAA Division 1 school, for the 2016/17 season.

“Marcus is the type of player that has the ability to play in any situation,” said Rivermen assistant coach Kurt Astle.

“He’s hard to defend against down low and on the attack. In the defensive zone, he makes good reads and can execute when put in an out-numbered situation.

“Marcus’ awareness in the defensive zone allows him to play key minutes in a tight game which gives him the title of a two-way centre.”

Vela was held scoreless in the Rivermen’s first two games this season, a pair of losses at the BCHL Bauer Showcase in Chilliwack.

The Rivermen are back in action on Sept. 28 when they face the Vernon Vipers.

The team’s home opener is Oct. 4 against the Nanaimo Clippers at the Langley Events Centre.
