Vernon edges Penticton midget rec 2 team for tournament championship

The Penticton 2 midget recreation team lost a tight battle to Vernon in a Penticton Minor Hockey Association tournament.

Penticton 2 bowed to Vernon 5-4 in the championship final of the Penticton Minor Hockey Association midget recreation tournament.

Scoring for the Vees were Ben Schwabe, Jake McHale, Don McVicor and Kiver Heintz.

Penticton went 4-1-0 and advanced to the final after defeating Penticton 1 5-4.

“It was a good game. We were down 5-1 at one point,” said coach Russell Schwabe. “We ran into a hot goalie. We controlled most of the play. The boys worked hard.”

With a short bench, the Vees also received a strong performance from affiliate player Richter Heintz.

Penticton 3 went 2-1-1 and won its final game 7-4 over Trail. The tournament featured 16 teams, including three from Kamloops.

In other PMHA action, the Game Time Sports Atom Development 2 Vees played in the Apex Winter Classic and won bronze. They finished first in their division after round robin play. The annual jamboree raised more than $24,000 for B.C. Children’s Hospital.

Bantam Vees lose to Trail

The Murray GM bantam tier 2 Vees lost to Trail 4-3. Aaron Funk scored twice, while Owen Labadie scored the other goal. The Vees are next in action on Jan. 14 at 5:30 against West Kelowna at Memorial Arena.

Atom Vees cruise past Summerland

The Vees Atom Development1 team picked up an easy 10-1 win over Summerland. Dexter Materi led the Vees with a hattrick, while Cole Wadsworth and Isaac Finer scored twice. Matt Reader and Simon Bowland scored once. Collecting assists were Carson Burnett,

Travis Bravo, Noah Schwab, Materie and Wadsworth.
