Vernon Sky fall to rivals at Super Series event

It was a top-four showing for the Vernon Sky Volleyball Club’s U16A girls at the Super Series tournament in Burnaby

It was a top-four showing for the Vernon Sky Volleyball Club’s U16A girls at the Super Series tournament in Burnaby.

Troy Lorenson’s squad finished fourth out 24 teams, dropping the bronze medal match, 17-25, 17-25, to Okanagan rivals Kelowna Volleyball Club West.

Sky finished third in its power pool of four teams with a 1-2 record. Vernon opened with a 2-1 loss to the Prince George Kodiaks (20-25, 25-20,13-15), defeated Apex Prime of Vancouver 2-1 (20-25, 25-20, 16-14) and lost in straight sets to Action of Burnaby, 17-25, 17-25.

Vernon advanced to the playoffs, crossing over to meet teams from another pool, and started the round of 16 by stopping the Apex Aces of Vancouver in straight sets, 25-18, 25-15.

This put Sky into a quarterfinal match against the Seaside Storm of White Rock. In what turned out to be the game of the weekend for Sky, Vernon came from behind to beat the Storm 2-1 (25-20, 26-28, 18-16).

Sky rallied from a 14-8 deficit in the third and deciding game.

In the semifinals, Vernon fell 17-25, 22-25 to Vancouver Apex.

The tournament was a tune-up for Sky who are preparing to take part in the provincial championships May 7 and 8 in Abbotsford, and the National 16U West finals in Calgary May 20-22.
