The VIBI Mariners were able to find some different ways to win ball games on the weekend.
Nanaimo’s Vancouver Island Baseball Institute college team won three out of four games in Kelowna, defeating the Calgary Dinos 7-2 and falling 4-3 to the Okanagan Coyotes on Saturday and then beating Calgary 7-3 and getting past Okanagan 3-1 on Sunday.
Austin Gurr picked up the win in the weekend opener, thowing a complete nine innings while allowing just one earned run and striking out nine. Gobind Sall hit a single and a double and Matt Brisson had two hits.
In the loss, Tate Yuzda hit a single and a double.
Sunday’s early game say Brisson and Adrian Gutierrez lead the offence, both going 3-for-4 at the plate. Liam Ballance was 2-for-3. Tyler Ulrich was the winning pitcher after six innings of work.
In the finale, Brodie Stairs got the win, striking out eight and allowing three hits. Yuzda was 2-for-4.
GAME ON … The Mariners play a series against the Coyotes this weekend (April 16-17) at Serauxmen Stadium. Saturday’s doubleheader starts at 2 p.m. and Sunday’s action gets underway at 10 a.m.
