Vikes rookie athlete of week

As if the UVic Vikes needed another vote of confidence going into the Canada West men’s soccer semifinals against the Alberta Golden Bears on Saturday. The first-place Vikes are unbeaten in 12 straight games and are coming off a 2-0 shutout of the Golden Bears last week.

Well, they got one anyways.

Rookie Craig Gorman is the Canada West conference’s male athlete of the week for scoring a pair of game-winning goals as the Vikes swept Saskatchewan 1-0 and Alberta 2-0 last weekend. The wins propelled the Vikes to first in the conference, and gave them the right to host the Canada West playoffs Saturday (Nov. 5) and Sunday at Centennial Stadium.

Saturday the Vikes play the Alberta Golden Bears at 2 p.m., while the UBC Thunderbirds and Trinity Western Spartans compete in the earlier semifinal at noon.

Winners will meet in the Canada West final on Sunday, 2:15 p.m., with the third place game at noon.

Charger named PacWest athlete of the week

Camosun Chargers captain Garrett Marcellus is the PacWest men’s volleyball athlete of the week.

The fourth-year had one of his best all around performances, leading the Chargers to two wins over the visiting Capilano University Blues last weekend.

Marcellus’ range was key in his selection by PacWest. From the left side on Friday, Marcellus registered 10 kills, three blocked points and eight digs, and anchored the rotation with consistent passes to his setter. Then playing in the middle on Saturday he continued his winning ways with eight kills, five blocks, and ace and three digs, totaling 27 points in two matches from two different positions.

The Chargers are now ranked thrid in the PacWest and 13th in the nation. This weekend they visit the reigning national champions Columbia Bible College Bearcats (Abbotsford).
