VIU basketball teams pick up where they left off

NANAIMO – VIU’s men’s and women’s b-ball teams won all their games on the weekend as the PacWest regular season resumed.

The VIU Mariners basketball teams didn’t miss a beat coming back from the break.

Vancouver Island University’s men’s and women’s b-ball teams won all their games on the weekend as the Pacific Western Athletic Association regular season resumed.

The M’s men got to triple digits in both their wins at the VIU gym, beating the Columbia Bible College Bearcats 104-71 on Friday, then hammering the Kwantlen Eagles 116-57 the following afternoon. The M’s women also won by blowout scores both days, earning an 81-50 victory against the Bearcats on Friday followed by a 70-44 decision over the Eagles on Saturday.

VIU’s top scorer Friday was Bryson Cox, who dropped in 23, while Curtis Wilson scored 21 points and pulled down 11 rebounds.

The next day it was Josh Ross leading the way with 25 points. Jason Fortin had 19 points and 14 boards and Cox contributed 20 points.

The VIU women were led Friday by Lanae Adams, who scored 20, and Sienna Pollard who scored 19 points and picked up 12 rebounds.

Pollard had 26 points and 14 boards the next day, Adams scored 21 and Sara Simovic recorded 12 points and 11 rebounds.

VIU’s basketball teams will be on the road next weekend (Jan. 15-16) against the Quest Kermodes and Langara Falcons and M’s coach Matt Kuzminski is expecting more challenging games now that it’s the new year.

“They can be tougher, because teams cue in more on what you’re doing,” he said. “They’ve scouted you, they kind of know your personnel a little better.”
