Vancouver Island University’s basketball teams got the new year off on the right foot.
The VIU Mariners men’s and women’s teams beat the Camosun Chargers on Friday in Victoria.
The M’s men won 79-71, led by Justin King’s 33 points and nine rebounds. Kadeem Stewart scored 13 points.
For the Mariners women, who won, 68-48, Amanda Tapia scored 22 points, Sienna Pollard added 16 and Jenna Carver scored 12 points to go with 11 rebounds.
“[We] played very well and unselfishly,” said Bill McWhinnie, coach of the VIU women, in an e-mail. “[We] played with intensity and enthusiasm.”
The teams play on the road Friday (Jan. 16) and Saturday against the Langara Falcons and Douglas Royals, respectively.
