The VIU Mariners, defending national champions, are again shaping up as the team to beat.
Vancouver Island University’s women’s volleyball squad moved up to No. 1 in the Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association rankings after two convincing wins this past weekend.
VIU travelled to Abbotsford and beat the Columbia Bible College Bearcats in straight sets on Friday and Saturday, winning 25-16, 25-23, 25-23 and then winning by more dominant scores the next day, 25-16, 25-13, 25-13.
The Mariners were led to victory by PacWest Athlete of the Week Mikayla Wagner, who had seven digs and six kills in Friday’s win and nine kills in Saturday’s rematch.
In other volleyball news, VIU’s men’s team remained undefeated in PacWest play with two wins against Columbia. The Mariners were consistent, winning 25-22, 25-17, 25-23 on Friday and 25-22, 25-15, 25-23.
GAME ON … VIU’s volleyball teams will enjoy a bye week and then will be back on the road Nov. 18-19 to face the Capilano Blues in North Vancouver.
