Wellington’s teams are on top in local hoops.
Wellington Secondary School’s senior boys’ and senior girls’ basketball squads swept their Superball tournament on the weekend.
Welly’s boys beat the Dover Bay Dolphins 66-55 in Saturday’s final after the Wildcats girls got past the Carihi Tyees 47-42.

Anton Kamke led Wellington with 30 points and also had a standout defensive game. Hayden Jeffrey added 12 points for the ’Cats, Joseph Almoete had 11 and Daniel Goodman scored 10. Jordan Gladstone scored 21 points for Dover and Fraser Schmidt had 11.
The third-place game saw the Barsby Blazers handle the D.W. Poppy Redhawks 49-33. Chris DeGoutiere led Barsby with 19 points and North Rainey scored 14.
In the girls’ final, Olivia Mjaaland led the way with 12 points.
The Nanaimo District Islanders took third in the girls’ draw, doubling up Dover Bay 74-37. Natasha Jensen led NDSS with 28 points and Tkia King scored 22. For the Dolphins, Danielle Frinton was top scorer with 17 points.
