White Rapids fast heading into provincials

The Nanaimo White Rapids, and swimmers from around the province, will all be trying for their fastest laps of the summer.

The Nanaimo White Rapids, and swimmers from around the province, will all be trying for their fastest laps of the summer. The local club hosts the B.C. Summer Swimming Association Championships starting Monday (Aug. 13) at the Nanaimo Aquatic Centre.

“The atmosphere around the pool since Day 1 has been unreal, with the support from the board and the parents,” said Gareth Saunders, Rapids coach. “They’ve put a lot of time into organizing provincials and supporting us as coaches and supporting the swimmers.”

Provincials begin with water polo all day Monday and games continue all day Tuesday and Wednesday until noon. Diving gets underway Tuesday at 8 p.m. and continues Wednesday at noon and Thursday at 7 a.m. Synchronized swimming starts Wednesday from 5:30-9:30 p.m. and wraps up Thursday afternoon. The swimming races go all day Friday through Sunday.

White Rapids rock regionals

The city’s B.C. Summer Swimming Association club won the zone title by an overwhelming margin at the 2012 Ray Newman Vancouver Island Regional Championships Aug. 3-5 in Courtenay.

One of the highlights was the teamwork shown by the White Rapids, who earned 25 medals in relay races. The club has enough depth in the Div. 5 boys’ division that the Rapids earned gold and silver in both the 200-metre medley relay and 200m freestyle relay races.

In individual racing, the most exciting final was the Div. 1 boys’ 50-metre breaststroke, which saw Nanaimo’s Blake Nowicki and Courtenay’s Bryce Benton touch the wall with the exact same finishing time of 59.71 seconds.

The Nanaimo White Rapids will host provincial championships at the Nanaimo Aquatic Centre starting Monday (Aug. 13).
