Annual competition will attract drivers from across the Island

The best sprint car and super modified drivers on the Island are in town this weekend for the annual Strawberry Cup races at Western Speedway.

The two-night show, on tonight (June 12) and Saturday, features some of the fastest cars to turn laps around the Langford tri-oval. They include vintage super modified and sprint cars, plus the Richlock Rentals winged sprints and Wilroc non-wing cars.

Qualifying for both nights starts at 5:30 p.m. with racing getting underway at 6:30.

Last Saturday’s racing saw Aaron Cameron capture the 35-lap bomber car main, winning a late battle against Sean Whitely. Bill Gallacher wound up third, while son Bill Gallacher Jr. was fourth. Cameron also took second in the second heat race and third in the trophy dash.

Other winners were Whitely in the second heat race, Daniel David in the first heat and Phil Lagan in the trophy dash.

In the demo cars and trucks division, Doug Richens won the cars heat race and trophy dash, while Kenny Baker won the truck dash and the combined heat race. George Haywood won the combined trophy dash.

Among the mini figure eights, Tanner Jacobs captured the 40-lap main by a wide margin over second-place finisher Jeff Foley. Kyle Rizok was next, followed by Daryn Cahill.

Other winners were Alex Carey in the trophy dash, Bill Gallacher in the first heat race and Cahill in the second heat.
