Abbotsford powerlifter Jon Wolbers turned in a pair of world record-setting performances at a competition in Portland last week.

The 66-year-old set new standards in the law and fire 64-plus category for both the bench press (358 pounds) and the deadlift (551 pounds) at the GLC 2000 National Championship.

Wolbers also picked up the best lifter award across all age groups and weight classes, based on pounds lifted relative to body weight.

“Not bad for an old guy,” Wolbers said with a chuckle. “You wonder how long you can stay strong, but it’s still going well.”

Wolbers, a competitive lifter for 25 years, is prepping for the world championships in Las Vegas in November.
