The first 12 tenants moved into the completed seniors rental housing units on the 4600 block of Davis Ave. June 1, and the remaining residents will move into the units July 1.

The expected move-in date changed from mid-January 2011 to May 2011, then June and July, because of winter weather conditions.

BC Housing said work like exterior painting and landscaping were pushed back for a better quality product.

The construction of the 24 housing units for seniors and people with disabilities on the former farmers market location began last summer.

Modules were trucked into town in July and August to be secured onto the site and cost $52,000 each, for a total cost of $1.2 million.

Overall, the project cost of this housing development came to just under $4 million and the remaining money minus the module expense went towards development costs and contractors for site work.

With the federal and provincial government both contributing money to the program to communities throughout the province, the city only had to come up with the land for the housing development.

It paid out $75,000 for a bit more extra land around the farmers market site, which made it possible for the number of units to jump from 20 to 24.

While there were more applications than units to go around, BC Housing officials said a team was involved in selecting the tenants.

A few local organizations put in a bid to operate the development but were determined to not be financially viable.

Instead, BC Housing will be operating the units itself through a contracted site representative.
